KOTA KINABALU: About 50 boxers are set to slog it out for honours at the Mohd Antang Cup Sandakan Zone Boxing Championship that gets underway in Sandakan today.

The two-day championship that ends on Tuesday is happening at Sibuga Jaya multipurpose hall in Mile 8. According to the organising committee chairman, Elpedio John Adriano said the bouts will begin from 1pm on both tournament days.

“The tournament is organised by the Sabah Boxing Association,” he said adding that Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Poon Ming Fung @ Frankie will grace the opening ceremony (today).

Elpedio, who is also tournament director, said SBA president Datuk Orlando Harumal will also be around.

He added that five teams will be in the fray namely Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Tongod and Armed Forces. The tournament features 49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg and 91kg weight categories.

According to Elpedio, who is also SBA deputy president, Mohd Antang is a former national boxer and represented Malaysia in the 1977 SEA Games where he won a bronze medal.

“He donated a challenge trophy for this tournament,” said Elpedio.

“We hope to unearth new talents from the competition because Sandakan has always produce qualify boxers such as Khamis Amat, Eddy Kalai, Mohd Antang, Paulus Fernandez, Mazlan James Salan, Hainol Ramli, Harun Ramli, Khairol Kalai. Effendy Kala, Ali Basah and Affendi Hamin to name a few,” he said.

Elpedio also said that SBA has a year-long boxing development calendar to prepare for the Mayor Cup, President Cup, Malaysia Cup, Saga as well as Sukma (2020).

“We are calling on the Sandakan public, particularly boxing enthusiastic to come and supports the tournament,” he said.
