Strong field to battle for honours at Senior C’ship

2nd July, 2009

KOTA KINABALU: A strong field of senior golfers from Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah are expected to battle for honours when the 3rd Pan Borneo Senior Amateur Golf Championship tees off at the Sabah Golf & Country Club (SGCC) from July 8-9.

A total of 124 senior golfers have confirmed their participation to vie for the nett and gross prizes in different age categories namely, Group A (55-59 years) and those above 75 years.

The two-day tournament with staggered start will see several senior and veteran golfers including evergreen and the most consistent Sabahan golfer Peter Wong.

Peter, one of Sabah’s top amateurs during his heyday with multiple amateur opens titles in his showcases, will be on the field and a golfer to watch.

Another veteran Datuk Chin Phui Kong at 86 years old is the oldest golfer, who still has his touches in golf and the second oldest from Sabah is Anthony Chiu.

Joint Organising Chairman Thomas Moore Willie said yesterday, Sabah is most likely to field other consistent senior golfers such as Datuk Haji Majin Ajing, Herman Anjin, Anthony Asing, M K Kim, Martin Wong, Jason Jeonoi, Haji Jeman and Datuk Liew Sak Siong.

Brunei on the other hand will be led by the President of the Brunei Senior Golfers’ Association General Dato Pengiran Haji Abidin, his deputy a 5-handicapper Alfred Shim and a few seniors.

He said Sarawak too boasts a strong field of golfers, to be spearheaded by its Captain Bernard Kiew, who is leading 29 golfers who can pose a strong challenge both in the team nett and gross sections.

Thomas added that banking on Peter’s past track records and experience, the home team should have an edge over Brunei and Sarawak due to their knowledge of the SGCC course.

The inaugural championship was hosted by Brunei in 2007, followed by Sarawak the following year.

The championship is jointly organised by the Senior Golfers’ Society of Malaysia, Sabah Branch under Thomas, and the Senior Golfers’ Society of Sabah under Datuk Claudius Roman.
