KOTA KINABALU: The Mr Sabah 2009 Bodybuilding Championship to be held this month will be a one-day affair.
Sabah Amateur Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) Competition and Social Welfare Director Joanes Staneslous, who confirmed this yesterday, cited that among the reasons for the minor change is because they are taking a cut-cost measure due to the current economic downturn.
Furthermore, he added, the association needs to spend prudently as sponsorships are hard to come by.
“So that is the reason why we have decided to hold the finals to coincide with our fund raising dinner.
“We hope the money raised from the dinner will help the association’s coffer. At the same time part of the proceeds will also help us cover the costs in staging the championship.
“We need financial assistance because we will also be sending a squad to take part in the upcoming Mr Malaysia Championship which will be held in Johor late July,” said Joanes.
The annual event has always been a two-day competition in the past with the first day for pre-judging while the second day the finals.
But this time around, everything will be completed in one day with the pre-judging expected to be held from morning until late afternoon while the final in the evening.
Despite having it in just one day, Joanes assured that it will not lack thrills and spills as they are expecting the championship to be more competitive with the arrival of several new faces.
The championship will be held at the 1Borneo Hypermarket Ballroom on July 17.
The pre-judging will start at 10am while the finals from 7pm.
Meanwhile, Joanes said that the association is satisfied with their hulksters’ performances at the recent Mr Borneo Bodybuilding Championship held in Labuan.
They targeted three gold medals, but they returned home with four gold medals.
They won the gold medals through Yong Chee Ken, Mark Allen, Hajimin Wasili and Robin Stephanus.
And it could have been more, but some dubious decision saw former Mr Malaysia Henro Lee had to be contented with a silver medal as the gold went to a Brunei hulkster.
Joanes said all the four gold medal winners as well as Henro will be among the 80 hulksters from throughout the State competing at the upcoming Mr Sabah.
