Sabah Forestry Department to host 11th International Conference

19th March, 2019

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Forestry Department will be hosting the 11th International Conference on Heart of Borneo (Ho) with the theme “Transcending Boundaries for a New Conservation Era”.

The event scheduled for March 21 -22 here will be launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

This international conference aims to realign the roles of research in support of science-based conservation, to consolidate conservation and management of the forests through statewide jurisdictional approach to empower community participation, and to institute conservation in other sectors.

And, these sectors will provide inputs to strengthen conservation finance through payment for ecosystem services. The conference will begin with four keynote addresses from four notable nature conservation leaders in the morning , and will resume with concurrent sessions focusing on three main sectors undertaken for Jurisdictional and Landscape Management; Science-Based Conservation & Community Outreach, and Institutionalization of Conservation Finance & Payment for Ecosystem Services.

This year, the conference is also providing platforms to highlight community participation, and for the local postgraduate students to share their research findings.

The conference will be attended by about 700 participants, from various sectors locally and internationally, including students from higher learning institutions.

Participation is strictly by invitation only but members of the public are most welcomed to visit the conference exhibition to view the various conservation initiatives within the HoB landscape executed by the Sabah Forestry Departments and partners.

In conjunction with the launching of the conference, 10 memorandums of understanding willbesigned between the state government and various parties.
