KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC) has spent about RM4 million for corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes since 2007.
It began conducting CSR activities in the mid 90s on a small scale through its own PRIDE groups, Social Recreation Clubs and individual groups.
However, as of two years ago, with the approval of the state government, the corporation would set aside 5 per cent of annual profit after tax specifically for the programme.
“The programme has benefited thousands,” said SCC chairman, Teo Chee Kang when witnessing the handing over of the letter of intent from SCC general manager Vincent Pung to Lung Yuen Association chairman Hsieh Yang Vui yesterday to part finance the construction of an orphanage at Jalan Sulaman.
“We are happy indeed that your organisation shares the same sentiment as us towards the less fortunate and the needy. As such we are glad to be your partner and contribute part of the required financing for your orphanage project,” said Teo.
Through the CSR programme, SCC has built hostels, maternity clinics, rural libraries, orphanages, kindergartens, sanctuaries for single mothers and abused women, bridges, gravity water systems and training centres for the disabled.
“We have also contributed towards the repair and extension of facilities and donated medical equipment, dialysis machine, Braille machines for the blind and many more,” he said.
SCC has also started a weekly talk on Wednesdays for pensioners in Penampang since February 25, 2009.
It has facilitated others from outside the state to contribute through the CSR programmes such as ECM Libra from Kuala Lumpur and the Alumni of Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Kulim, Kedah to build a hostel each in SMK Malangkap, Kota Marudu and SMK Tun Fuad, Kiulu respectively.
