TAWAU: A local teenager and his boat assistant were detained by the Marine Police for attempting to smuggle nine illegal immigrants into Tawau on Wednesday.

Sabah Marine Police commander ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said a Marine Police team from the intelligence unit conducted surveillance in waters off the seaport on receiving information about 3pm.

A speedboat was spotted heading towards the direction of the seaport from Sungai Haji Kuning, Sebatik and was intercepted by the Marine Police boat, he said.

The Marine policemen checked and found the boatman, 18, and boat assistant, 16, were ferrying nine passengers comprising five males and four females, two of them children, aged nine to 73.

According to him, the boatman is a local while the assistant boatman and all passengers did not have valid identification and travel papers and are believed to be Indonesians.

All of them were escorted back to the Tawau Marine Police base for further action. The boatman and his assistant were arrested for investigation under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (amendment 2010).

According to the commander, the fiberglass speedboat and a 60 HP engine estimated worth RM28,000, were also seized.

In another case, the Marine Police arrested a man and seized crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine or syabu at about 4pm the same day, Mohamad Pajeri said.

The suspect, aged 40, who did not have any valid identification documents, was travelling on a speedboat heading towards Sungai Haji Kuning from the old CIQ when stopped by a Marine Police patrol boat.

The methamphetamine and sheets of aluminum foil were found in a sling bag following a check on the passenger. The latter and the boatman, aged 17, were brought to the Tawau Marine Police base for further action.

Mohamad Pajeri said the suspect and seized crystalline substance were referred to the Tawau Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division for investigation under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
