SANDAKAN: Several areas in the district were hit by flash floods following continuous heavy rain during the early hours of Tuesday.

Rescuers from Sandakan and Beluran, and rescue teams from the Civil Defence Force (APM) were dispatched to the affected places to provide assistance to victims and also monitor the situation.

Sandakan firemen evacuated 23 people from 10 families to the nearby village mosque after being notified of the flood at 6.57am in Kampung Pertanian Mile 25, Jalan Labuk.

The group comprising eight men, six women, five boys, three girls and an infant were temporarily moved to Masjid Nurul Iman located on higher ground due to rising flood waters.

The operation ended at 1.23pm after flood waters began to recede and the affected victims would only be allowed to return to their respective houses once the situation was safe.

Kampung Pertanian is situated about 38km from the Sandakan fire and rescue station.

Sandakan firemen were also sent to Jalan Batu Sapi to monitor the flood situation in the area at 9.45am.

There was also no evacuation as the flood began to recede at Taman Poh Hing and Kampung Gas. Workers from the Public Works Department (JKR) concessionaire cleared debris swept onto the road in a mudslide.

Meanwhile at Kampung Sungai Memanjang located nearly 25km from the Beluran firehouse, firemen responded to a distress call at 6.10am.

There were no evacuation but firemen tied rope from higher ground to two houses to enable the five adults to leave their homes if the flood continued to rise.

The operation in Kampung Sungai Memanjang concluded at 10.23am when the flood started to subside.

Meanwhile Sandakan APM officer Kapten Ahmad Roslan Mohd Kamel said the level of Sungai Memanjang began to rise at 4.45am while the flood at Kampung Pertanian rose to two feet at 7.02am.
