THE ESTABLISHMENT of Confucius Institute (CI) in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has recently been approved by Hanban, the agency under the Ministry of Education China that oversees Confucius Institute.
The Conference was attended by more than 2,000 international delegates, including representatives from institutions that have established Confucius Institute, while UMS delegation to this Conference was led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Datuk K Y Mustafa. The Confucius Institute in UMS is scheduled to be officially launched in early 2019.
The establishment of Confucius Institute in UMS makes UMS as the third higher learning institution in Malaysia to have the Institute, and among the 510 Confucius Institutes in 127 countries worldwide. In Malaysia, Confucius Institute have been established in University Malaya and Segi University.
The running of this Institute is partly funded by Hanban. The primary roles of Confucius Institute are to contribute towards the teaching and learning of Mandarin language, and to facilitate cultural exchange with China.
In the context of UMS, this Institute will benefit UMS students as well as the local community in Sabah.
UMS also expressed its sincere appreciation and gratitude to various parties in Malaysia as well in China (including Changsa University of Science and Technology) for the cooperation, support and contribution towards the successful establishment of Confucius Institute in UMS.
