National duty for five Sabah athletes

KOTA KINABALU: Five Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas) athletes are representing Malaysia at the World Masters Athletics Championships (WMAC) taking place in Malaga, Spain.

The State veterans departed last weekend for the championship which starts today until September 16 where leading the charge is Samas president, Aliudin Jumaat.

The 60 metres hurdles silver medallist at last year’s World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships will be participating in the men’s 60-64 years’ decathlon and 100 metres hurdles events.

Other athletes including decorated medallist, Juliana Gumpil who is competing in the women’s 55-59 years’ 100 metres and long jump events followed by Lucy Yong in the women’s 60-64 years’ long jump and triple jump events.

The two others are involved the women’s 40-44 years’ age group namely Bernice Lau competing in the 100 metres and long jump events while Joan Goh is vying in the 10 kilometres run event.

All five veteran athletes are either current or former Asian Masters Athletics Championships (AMAC) medal winners which Aliudin said that the State veterans are looking forward to bringing home good results from Spain.
