Goals galore on opening weekend of championship

KOTA KINABALU: The RM32,000 winner takes all Sabah Football Open Championship kicked off with goals galore matches throughout last weekend with five games played.

The first match saw BB Queen thrash Sporting Kinabalu FT, 6-1 courtesy of a hat-trick by Mujib before Faizal, Well and Hardy Udin scored one apiece for the three points in the Group A encounter.

Another Group A match witnessed PISGO FT Beaufort winning 5-0 against MKT FT Tenom after goals by Mohd Faris Azlan, Mohd Raizan Abdullah, Mohd Sharif Alias, Mohd Khairul and Herman Tino.

Meanwhile, in Group B, NFT Nabawan were held to a 2-2 draw with Racing Athletic KK while Marven Sports Inanam defeated SB Villa Tenom 2-0 in a Group C tie.

Lastly, Milaad FC Matunggong were forced to settle with a point after they drew 2-2 against TBR FC KK in the Group D clash where all matches were played at the IPK Sabah football field, near here.

The championship sees a total of 30 teams participating where they are divided into eight groups for the preliminary stage.

The top two teams of each group at the end of the group stage will qualify for the top 16 knockout stage which will go all the way to determine the winners of the RM32,000 prize money.

For the record, all matches will be played on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) at both the IPK Sabah and Prisons Centre football field in Kepayan.
