KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) have mounted a search and rescue (SAR) for a crewman who went missing after a trawler sank in the waters near Mengalum Island yesterday.

The 23-year-old Indonesian identified as Husain Ishak was onboard the trawler which was cruising back towards Mengalum Island from Safma Jetty before the vessel was struck by strong waves.

The incident was witnessed by another fisherman Afiq Heng, who alerted the authorities at about 6.45am.

Sabah and Labuan director First Admiral Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som said after gathering information, a patrol boat was deployed to the scene at about 7.35am.

“We are continuing with the SAR efforts with the aid of Marine police and local fishermen,” he said in a statement.
