Mukhriz qualifies to contest Umno Youth top post

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth executive committee member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir has qualified to contest the movement’s top post when he garnered 40 nominations from 72 divisions which held their delegates’ meetings since Thursday.

The number exceeded the minimum required (38) or 20 per cent of nominations from 191 divisions nationwide.

Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has so far obtained 19 nominations while former Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo had 12 and Perlis Umno liaison deputy chairman Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin managed only one nomination – from the Padang Besar division.

Mukhriz received nominations from the Jerlun, Besut, Kimanis, Alor Star, Cameron Highlands, Kota Melaka, Tasek Gelugor, Bukit Gelugor, Teluk Intan, Pagoh, Pasir Gudang, Kalabakan, Langkawi, Kuantan, Rasah, Jelebu, Jempol, Ipoh Barat, Lipis, Bentong, Tenggara, Padang Rengas, Subang, Kampar, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Permatang Pauh, Bagan, Pokok Sena, Batu Pahat, Padang Serai, Setiawangsa, Simpang Renggam, Kulai, Tebrau, Bakri, Sepanggar, Beaufort, Gombak and Kuala Selangor divisions.

Khairy was nominated by the Machang, Pengkalan Chepa, Ketereh, Silam, Bandar Tun Razak, Bagan Datoh, Beruas, Bachok, Raub, Rompin, Bagan Serai, Gelang Patah, Pontian, Parit Buntar, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Baharu, Bayan Baru, Keningau and Sepang divisions.

Dr Mohamad Khir’s nominations came from the Tumpat, Kapar, Cheras, Taiping, Masjid Tanah, Mersing, Shah Alam, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Nibong Tebal, Sungai Siput and Kinabatangan divisions.

For the post of Youth deputy chief, Muar Member of Parliament Razali Ibrahim has qualified to contest after obtaining 35 nominations while another contender, Umno Youth executive committee member Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican also qualified after getting 30 nominations.

To contest the post, the candidates need 29 nominations or 15 per cent from the 191 divisions.

Three other candidates for the post, Kota Kinabalu Youth chief Bahrul Razha Chuprat obtained two nominations, while Bagan Youth chief Marzuki Yahaya and Kapar Youth chief Faizal Abdullah received one nomination each.
