Couple killed in bomb blast

7th October, 2008

KOTA KINABALU : A Filipino couple having marital problem died when the husband detonated fish bombs killing both on the spot yesterday.

The victims have been identified as Babin Isang and his spouse,Indak Musa both 35 years of age. They leave behind 13 children.

Investigation showed the couple who were IMM13 holders from Kampung Kandang Ayam in Likas had lived separately following a misunderstanding more than a month ago.

Police found the couple’s ripped bodies believed to have been caused by the explosions of more than one fish bomb in the house of the wife’s sister in Kampung Cenderamata located some 150 metres away from the couple’s house.

Acting City Police Chief Supt Rowell Marung and other senior police officers were at the scene yesterday.

Police went to the scene after being informed of the explosion in the area at about 9am.

Rowell said Indak had been living in her sister’s house for more than a month after a spat with Babin.

Apparently, the wife had asked for a divorce and Babin had gone to the house to coax her out of it.

He left two of his children aged four and five outside the sister in law’s house before locking them out.

“The husband went to his sister in law’s house shortly before 9am and we believe he brought along homemade bombs (fish bombs) with him,” he said.

Police also found an unexploded bomb at the scene.

“We believe the husband detonated more than one bomb because their bodies were severely ripped and the explosion caused severe damage to the two-storey wooden house,” said Rowell.

The wife’s 15-year old niece who was in the kitchen during the explosion was injured in the face caused by glass splinters.

The victim’s two male relatives in their 20’s who were on the first floor were slightly hurt.

Rowell said the case was classified as sudden death pending under investigation.

Meanwhile,a neighbour,Sairi Samidi,42 said he was jolted when he heard the explosion as he was cooking.

“I thought a gas cylinder has exploded and was shocked that a bomb has gone off…I saw hairs at the scene,” he said in relating a chilling account of the incident.

Sairin also knew that the couple had been quarelling.- SHANE SHAH
