LONDON: The race is on to become Liverpool’s Grand Blaster.
Rafa Benitez’s Reds go to Manchester City on Sunday on 999 Premier League goals.
Skipper Steven Gerrard, who hit his 100th strike for the Kop club against PSV in midweek, would love to reach another milestone.
But he will be pushed all the way by Spanish goal-ace Fernando Torres, born-again Robbie Keane and Dutchman Dirk Kuyt.
It has taken Liverpool 626 matches to put themselves on the verge of the 1,000 Club.
Now they aim to join Manchester United and Arsenal in the net-tastic elite.
Torres is the favourite to hit the target first at Eastlands after his brace in the Merseyside derby, while Irishman Keane is bound to pull out another infamous cartwheel celebration if he bags the next goal.
Robinho has told his City team-mates to Beat Liverpool and win the title. The £32.5million striker claims City are genuine title contenders.
And the Brazilian wants the world to take notice of the top flight’s new big spenders with victory over the Kop on Sunday.
He said: “This is a great time to start winning games against the bigger teams so we can prove we are here to win the title.
“Do I think it’s possible? Yes. Liverpool is one of the great games with their history and tradition. Every player loves these moments and I cannot wait.
“We are not so far from the leaders and the league has just started.”
Meanwhile, Everton manager David Moyes said on Friday he was disappointed by the Football Association’s decision to uphold Australian international Tim Cahill’s three-match suspension.
Cahill was sent-off for a tackle on Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso in the 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat last weekend, a decision which Everton appealed.
“Losing Tim is a big setback because I think it was wrong,” said Moyes.
“It wasn’t a tackle that warranted a red card. There’s no doubt about that.”
Everton, struggling in the Premier League and who were knocked out of the UEFA Cup at the first round stage on Thursday, will be without Cahill for their next three league matches against Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester United.
