City Express favourite for Chairman’s Cup

KOTA KINABALU: Total prize money of RM33,260 awaits the winners of the Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) Chairman’s Cup to be held at the Tambalang Race Course in Tuaran, near here.

The Chairman’s Cup race will be the main event on the day, which will also see three other races to be held on the second day of the Chinese New Year celebration on February 17.

Opened to Class I and II ponies, the Chairman’s Cup will cover a distance of 1,900m on the turf track whereby the champion of the event will receive RM20,000, followed by the runner-up RM7,000, RM3,600 for the second runner-up and RM1,650 for the third runner-up.

Nine candidates will be vying for the top honour and a close contest is expected with City Spider also entered for the race this year.

However, it is City Express that is tipped to win the Chairman’s Cup with the other top contenders being Zack and Horse Queen.

The Chairman’s Cup is scheduled to take place as the third race of the day.

The other highly anticipated event will be the Fortune Bowl Race contested among Thoroughbred Horses for Class A and B.

There will be 14 horses entered or registered for the 1,900m race on a turf track where the favourites include Slippery Eel, Athena and Pop.

Total stake money of RM50,350 will be up for grabs where the winner will get RM30,000. The second to fourth placing will receive RM10,700, RM5,400 and RM2,500 respectively.

The Fortune Bowl race will be the last event on the day which is expected to start at 5pm.

As for the Steward’s Cup race, it is open to Class 7 Kampong Ponies covering a distance of 1,800m on sand track. There will be 11 candidates for the race which offers total stake money RM10,000 stake money. The winner will take home RM6,000.

The other race on the day will be the Trophy Race which will be the opening race of the day scheduled at 1pm. Eleven Class 10 Ponies have been entered for the 1,800m race on sand track challenging for the total stake money of RM7,540. The winner will receive RM4,500.

Meanwhile, there will also be off-course betting with live telecast from Singapore Turf Club on February 17 and February 18 respectively.

And on Sunday (February 18), RSTC will also be having races at the Tambalang Race Course while at the same time an off course betting from Hong Kong Jockey Club.

To usher the Year of the Dog, RSTC chairman Datuk Peter Chin Tet Fong and the committee members wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai.
