KOTA KINABALU: Internet users in Sabah will now be able to experience high speed wireless Internet access via WiMAX ((Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology.

REDtone International, Malaysia’s leading alternative communications and multimedia service provider, yesterday launched its REDtone Wimax here in Kota Kinabalu, making Sabah the first state in East Malaysia to enjoy such broadband services.

Powered by Motorola technology, REDtone Wimax network covering the area from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport to the city centre ensures faster cost effective internet access as compared to fixed line solutions.

WiMax complements other technologies such as fiber, ADSL, satellite and 3G, enabling users to pay up to 40 percent less than the conventional leased lines.

Apart from being cost effective, the system is also easy to set up and deployment time is very quick.

“We are now able to meet our customers’ growing demand for high speed Internet connection and advanced data applications,” said REDtone group chief executive Officer Zainal Amanshah yesterday.

He said their initial targets were corporate and SME sectors where REDtone was very strong at.

“And, by selectively focusing on high density areas, we are committed to achieving the 25 per cent coverage of the population in Sabah by end of this year,” he added.

The national target for Internet penetration is achieving 50 percent coverage of the population by 2015.

REDtone is currently working with Motorola to expand the 2.3GHz broadband services to other areas outside the City and their immediate plan is to expand the network up to Wisma Innoprise before moving further up towards Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Zainal said the company was also planning to extend the service eventually to those in suburban and rural areas.

He also said they were currently in the process of studying the best option as to where to expand the broad band service next.

Meanwhile, Motorola vice president (Sales of Asia), Eric Starnes said they were pleased to work with REDtone in the supply and development of WiMAX.

“The commercial launch of REDtone’s WiMAX services reinforces our leadership in providing state-of-the-art WiMAX solutions to operators worldwide, enabling fixed and mobile WiMAX experience,” he said.

Zainal and Eric represented their respective companies to seal the WiMAX network deal. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Resources Development and IT Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai.
