Futsal short-list soon for Malaysia Games squads

4th December, 2017

By FRANCIS XAVIER

KOTA KINABALU: The open selection trials for the state’s men and women’s 2018 Malaysia Games futsal squads held at Yayasan Sabah Futsal Arena attracted about 180 hopefuls yesterday.

The one-day event was organised by the Sabah FA Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee. The committee’s deputy chairman Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah heads the selection panel that also comprised Azman Soaibah, Rosmadih Wasli, Mohd Nazrey Mohd Yunus and Khairul Japli.

“We in the selection committee will short-list the names identified from the trials today (yesterday). “We are looking at 25 (men) and 20 (women) to continue with the first phase of training, which is expected to start early next year,” Asyraaf said, who expressed his satisfaction with the turnout.

He said they were quite a number of talented players with good quality and skills.

“The individual technique as well as tactical knowledge of some players is much better than previous years. This will make the coaches’ task much easier in training.

“Four to six of them are experienced players who featured competitively in the recent Sabah Futsal League. These players will be the backbone of the Sukma team,” he pointed out.

“I’m sure the teams will shine under the guidance of a right coach with experience,” he said before revealing that the committee’s chairman, Yamani Hafez Musa, will announce the names of the players selected to undergo the first phase of training early next month.

“The chairman will also announce the coaching staff to lead the Sabah Sukma 2018 teams,” he said.
