KOTA KINABALU: SEA Games 110m hurdles gold medallist Rayzamshah Wan Sofian’s hopes of making his maiden debut at the Olympics in Beijing next month sunk in Vietnam on Monday.
The Keningau lad failed in his bid to earn a ticket under Category B after merely managing to clock a disappointing 15.15s in the final at the Vietnam Open that eventually saw him finishing sixth.
The qualifying mark under Category B is 13.72s. For the record, the Vietnam Open is the last qualifying venue.
The final was won by another Malaysian – Mohd Robani Hassan with a time of 14.06s while team-mate Mohd Faiz Mohamed claimed the silver medal after recording 14.35s.
However, with the time, both failed to make the trip to China come August.
Earlier on, the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union had been banking on Rayzamshah and Robani to hit the qualifying mark after registering a time of under 14s.
For the championship, the national body sent a total of five athletes with the other being Yap Hen Tzen, who won the women’s discus gold, and Mohd Zafril Zuslaini, who was competing in the 400m.
With the latest development, the MAAU will now pin their hopes on only three athletes at the world’s biggest sporting carnival, namely Roslinda Samsu (pole vault), Lee Hup Wei (high jump) and Yuan Yufang (walk).
