Suhaili hopes Yussof will rethink for contesting top post

23rd July, 2008

LABUAN: Incumbent Labuan Umno chairman, Datuk Haji Suhaili Rahman who is leading in nominations for the top post in the coming divisional elections, hopes his challenger, Labuan MP Datuk Haji Yussof Mahal will think twice over his decision to challenge for the post.

Suhaili, who has five nominations out of the six branches which has had its meeting so far, said he would give Yussof, who is currently the division’s deputy, the opportunity to discus the fight for positions.

“He has a week to seek out the best solution to decline to contest the top post so as to avoid a split between the leaders and members,” he said.

“I don’t want to see such a split take place just because of a fight between me and Yussof for the division’s top post.”

He said the tussle would also weaken the party.

Suhaili, who was the island’s MP for two terms until he was dropped for the March 8 elections, leads in the nomination race with five to Yussof’s one.

He needs another nomination to confirm his bid to retain the position in the division’s elections to be held in October.

The branches that have voted Suhaili are Patau Patau Dua, Lubok Temiang, Lajau, Sungai Bangat and Ranca Ranca Laut. Yussof’s sole nomination is by the Sungai Bedaun branch.
