KUALA LUMPUR: The government is offering individual taxi permits again, in stages between July 15 and Oct 14, the Dewan Negara was told yestrday.
Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Noh Omar said the offer was bound by several conditions, one of which was that the applicant must be a Malaysian citizen aged not more than 60 years at the time of making the application.
He was replying to Senator Heng Seai Kie who had wanted to know whether the government was considering offering taxi permits to individuals instead of companies which hired out the permits.
Up to Dec 31 last year, the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) had issued 31,760 taxi permits, of which 9,487 were issued to individuals and 22,273 to companies, which hired the permits to taxi drivers for between RM30 and RM40 a day.
Replying to a supplementary question, from Senator Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee, Noh said taxi drivers aged 60 years could apply for a bank loan to obtain the taxi permit, provided they had a second driver who could be their children or anyone else.
