Tourism products can offset lack of infrastructure, says Azalina

7th July, 2008

SANDAKAN: Sabah can attract tourists by offering them more tourism products even with a lack of infrastructure.

Minister of Tourism, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said Sabah particularly Sandakan had a wealth of tourism products that can be found in nature.

“Sabah is well known in the Asian region for its attractions such as the wildlife here in Sandakan,” she told reporters at a press conference at the Sabah Hotel here yesterday.

She therefore believed that infrastructure of international standards would not necessarily guarantee the arrival of tourists but rather products and service.

Azalina therefore commended the Sabah Tourism Board for working hard to promote tourism in the state.

“They have done a very good job because they have managed to bring tourism in Sabah to an impressive level,” she added.

Allocation for the tourism sector in Sabah this year was slightly increased to RM98.3 million from RM97.1 million last year.

Azalina said the Malaysian Forest Flora and Fauna Festival next year will also help to promote tourism in Sandakan.
