Tourism Board promoting Sandakan aggressively as a tourism destination

3rd July, 2008

SANDAKAN: Sabah Tourism Board (STB) is organising a series of activities to lure more local and foreign tourists to visit and stay longer in Sandakan.

“We are promoting Sandakan aggressively as a tourism destination because this east coast district is famous for its world renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, Turtle Island Parks and Kinabatangan River.

“It is also the gateway to Borneo’s wildlife,” STB chairman Tengku Datuk Zainal Adlin said at a press conference yesterday to announce a concert here by Sabah-based musical group Virtuoso Ensemble at Sabah Hotel on July 19.

He said the one-night concert by the eight-member group will mark the start of a series of tourism activities to get more tourists to stay a little longer instead of making day trips to Sandakan.

“The concert held in conjunction with Sandakan Festival 2008 is not only to promote Sabah’s local talents but also to give Sandakan residents a rare opportunity to enjoy such musical treat,” Tengku Adlin said.

The Virtuoso Ensemble is a unique musical group playing a combination of Western and Chinese musical instruments including the violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, yanqin, flute and percussion.

The concert is organised by Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of STB in collaboration with the Sandakan Municipal Council.

Tickets for dinner-cum-show are priced at RM200 per person. For bookings and more information, the public can contact Josie Sabinus of Sandakan Municipal Council at 089 273753.

Also present at the press conference yesterday were Sandakan Municipal Council president Yeo Boon Hai and secretary Mohd. Hamsan Haji Awang Supain.
