Newborn found abandoned

29th June, 2008

PENAMPANG: Persistent wailing awakened a housewife in the wee hours of Friday morning who was shocked to discover it was from a newborn placed at the front gate of her house in Taman Millennium Heights.

Masdiana Saide, 26, was roused from her sleep at 4.30am by the cries and found the male infant, wrapped in only a towel and with the umbilical cord still attached.

She quickly contacted the police who arrived led by district crime officer, ASP Che Rafizi Che Ramli.

Police believe the baby was delivered less than 24 hours before he was abandoned at the scene of the crime.

District police chief DSP Madang Usat said the newborn has been handed over to be cared for at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is reported to be doing well.

Madang said it was the first abandoned baby case reported in Penampang this year and investigations will be made under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

Those with information to assist in the investigations can contact the Penampang police at 088-712222.
