KOTA KINABALU: It was a fruitful outing for Sabah arm wrestlers at the Muar International Armwrestling Competition that was held at the Dataran Emas Muar, Johor recently.

The six state representatives led by father and son Jolly Johnson and Joffey Jolly clinched two titles from the international event.

They also won two silver and two bronze medals, while one of them finished sixth.

Joffey and Micky Cheah were the gold medal winners for the state team.

Joffey, who competed in two categories, also won two silver medals while the other was contributed by Alvian Ally. Jolly and Calveen Petrus won the bronze medals with Michael Ford clinching a sixth-placed finish.

Joffey clinched his gold medal in the Men’s Right Hand 75kg and below category by defeating Valen Low of Singapore in the final.

He had to settle for second best in the Men’s Left Hand 80kg and below after losing to Valentin Bobrovich of Belarus in the final.

As for Micky, he won his gold medal in the Novice 75kg and below category after defeating Alvian in an all-Sabah final.

Jolly settled for bronze in the Men’s Right Hand 75-85kg category.

The category was won by Kelvin Tsai of Taiwan, who defeated Mark Luis Ben of the Philippines in the final.

As for Calveen, he won his bronze medal in the Men’s Right Hand 85kg and above, while Mirtaleh Aslanov of Azerbaijan won the category after edging out Ryan Scott of Australia in the final.

Micheal Ford finished sixth in the same category.

“It was quite a good outing from the team. We managed to win two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

“It was very competitive because it attracted some top arm wrestlers from outside the country, who have competed at the highest level, such as the World Championship.

“So, apart from winning titles, this has been quite an eye opener for our arm wrestlers, particularly new faces such as Micky and Alvian,” said Jolly, who is also the Sabah Arm Wrestling Association deputy president.

He added that now they are looking forward to the Sabah Open Arm Wrestling Championship 2017, which is expected to be held later this year.

“We have started the ball rolling in getting everything done. We are getting all the paperwork ready, and would officially announce it soon,” he said.

“Like the Muar International Championship, we are also thinking of inviting international arm wrestlers to compete at the Sabah Open,” he said.
