Firefighters respond to mercury spill in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Firemen were called to clean up mercury spill after a thermometer was dropped on the floor in the room of an apartment at Kam Jai Yen off Mile 1 Jalan Utara on Sunday.

Five firefighters from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue station arrived at Block B of the residential area eight minutes upon receiving an emergency call at 9.40am.

They proceeded to the apartment where the incident happened and clean up the mercury spill using sulphate. None of the occupants were exposed to the mercury.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out from the switch box of a clothes shop in town on Saturday night but it was put out by workers before the arrival of firemen.

Two fire engines with eight firefighters responded following a distress call at 8.38pm. The blaze was already doused when they arrived at the scene.

The firemen checked the affected appliance to ensure the situation was safe before returning to the fire and rescue station. No casualties were reported. – By James Leong
