PENAMPANG: Movie-goers in Penampang and its surrounding areas will no longer have to suffer traffic congestion for the sake of cinema with the opening of mmCineplexes at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) early next year.

Speaking at the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony with mmCineplexes at ITCC here yesterday, ITCC developer, Sabanilam Enterprise Sdn Bhd, group general manager, Ceasar Mandela Malakun said that the cinema will serve the local community well.

“At the moment, there are only two cinemas in the Penampang area to cater to the huge population, but what sets us apart is that we have an international cinema operator in the form of mmCineplexes, with better service and higher standards.

“We are targeting the population in Penampang including Lido, Damai, Luyang, Kepayan, Donggongon, Putatan, and Bundusan.

“Normally, the Penampang folks would go all the way to the city just to watch movies and with the new cinema here at ITCC, we are providing an added convenience to the community,” he said.

Meanwhile, the MoU also marked the Singaporean company’s maiden foray into the East Malaysian market. Its Marketing and Business Development director, Jason Teo said that the company chose to collaborate with the ITCC because of its suitable location and the building’s strategic layout, making it convenient for the public to patronise.

“We have identified this area as very suitable because it is a growing residential area with no traffic jam compared to the city centre, and we think that the community here deserves to have another cinema,” he said.

When asked about their competitive edge, he said that the emphasis is more on the movie-goers’ experience.

“Good cinemas have good sound systems which many cinemas have already been doing, so we are looking at other qualities to set us apart from others.

“After all, being relatively young, we are more vibrant and more creative in providing new experiences to cinema-goers, and of course we have the best popcorn,” he said, adding that apart from providing high-quality seating, there will be premium seating as well.

With a total area of 7,000 sq feet, the mmCineplexes cinema will accommodate 1,000 people in eight halls located on the third floor of ITCC Shopping Mall.

According to Mandela, the cinema is very conveniently accessible where it is served by four sets of escalators from the ground floor.

With 1,800 parking bays available in the mall, he said finding a parking space will not be a problem. The ITCC Shopping Mall has recently obtained its Occupation Certificate and is scheduled to have its soft opening on August 25.

“Bringing in a family-friendly lifestyle mall into Kota Kinabalu’s closest neighbouring district, ITCC Shopping Mall is poised to become the new landmark in Penampang.

“With Bataras Hypermarket, large scale children’s amusement centre, North Borneo Handicraft and Cultural Centre, IT and gadget departmental store, and now mmCineplexes, ITCC Shopping Mall aims to bring every shopping convenience and comfort to the very doorstep of the large Penampang market,” added Mandela.

Also present were Sabanilam Enterprise Sdn Bhd Chairman Datuk Seri Clarence Bongkos Malakun, Managing Director Datin Seri Sylvia Malakun, Legal Advisor Alexander Hugo Malakun.
