South Memory Restaurant

Established in 2015, South Memory was named after a lane in Shanghai that was frequented by one of the six owners, Red Thien. The restaurant was previously located in Lido Plaza, but has recently shifted to Plaza Shell. Before the move, South Memory was focused on serving Shanghainese food. Cantonese, Hunan and Sichuan delicacies have since been added to the menu.

Stepping into the restaurant, diners will immediately be transported to Southern China. The colour red is prominent and wooden panels with traditional designs deck the restaurant and act as a partition. Photos of old Shanghai hang on the wall alongside Chinese calligraphies.

According to business partner Duncan Hiew, there were not many Chinese restaurants in Kota Kinabalu that offer such a wide variety of food from Southern China. Although, he admits that some of the items on the menu have been tweaked to suit the local palate.

Those who want to experience authentic Southern China cuisine can make a request with the kitchen and the chefs will prepare the food accordingly. Head Chef Yang is originally from China and has many years of experience working in prominent hotels and restaurants in Shanghai.

Popular items on the menu include the signature Braised Pork Belly. The pork is very tender and juicy, and full of flavour. The Hunan Chilli Fish Head is also a favourite. Although the dish is loaded with chillies, the spiciness does not overpower the taste of the fish.

The Prosperous Duck is a famous Shanghainese dish that is usually served during the festive season. It is stuffed with eight “treasures” including rice. The South Memory Steamed Sliced Grouper is also a winner. Tender fish slices is combined with black fungus and soy sauce. The Sichuan Spicy Fried Chicken is recommended with a side of beer. Once every two months, the restaurant introduces new dishes to spice things up. The latest items added to the menu include Fried Pork Knuckle, Lamb Rack and Chicken Roll with Hot and Spicy Shredded Potato.

For office workers wanting a quick bite during break time, the Set Lunch is suggested. The selection is delicious, the portion is adequate and it is also friendly on the wallet. Those wanting something a little more fancy can enjoy live music during dinnertime every Saturday.

“In the short span of six months since we started operating in Plaze Shell, we have organised numerous functions and events, which ranges from gatherings, meetings, birthdays, weddings and event launches,” Duncan said.

He added: “Currently, we can accommodate up to 170 guests. Although we are focusing on organising in-house events, we hope to be able to cater to outside functions in the near future.”
