LABUAN: More than 800 motorcyclists with 150cc and below machines took opportunity of the monthly ’’Free Petrol Top-Up’’ Saturday night, with 500 of them receiving a free motor service voucher each.

The free motor service organised yesterday by Labuan Umno Youth is in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration to help lessen the burden of the low-income group, especially the youth.

Its chief, Datuk Mohd Rafi Ali Hassan said the programmes were also aimed at establishing good rapport between the local leaders and youth.

“It is not about the amount we spend every month for the youth, but more importantly the good relationship we have with them,” he told Bernama.

“We started the ’’Free Petrol Top-Up’’ programme last year, after considering the economic issues faced by people on the island due to the effects of the closure of the oil and gas company operations, here.

“We discussed with the Federal Territories Minister and the Labuan Member of Parliament how we could help our youth who have become jobless. Then we came up with the idea of having this programme, and this is not in preparation for the coming 14th general election, as claimed,” he added.

Rafi who is also political secretary to the Federal Territories Minister, said a decision would be made whether or not to continue with the free motor service in future.

Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli said the programme would also help educate motorcyclists to take good care of their machines. “Regular servicing will help prolong the lifespan of the engine, and ensure a smooth ride during the ’’balik kampung’’ journey,” he said.
