Ranau athletes dominate, 25 new records shattered

KOTA KINABALU: Ranau athletes dominated the 9th MSSB West Coast Division Track and Field Championship held at Penampang Stadium which ended yesterday.

The champion racked in a total of 113 medals consisted of 48 gold, 41 silver and 24 bronze medals throughout the two-day championship to run away with the overall MSSB title.

Penampang took advantage of the home crowd to finish second place overall with 14 gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze medals.

Third place went to Kota Kinabalu after collecting 13 gold, 16 silver and 27 bronze medals while Tuaran had to settle for fourth after winning 12 gold, 19 silver and 22 bronze medals.

The championship this year also saw 25 new records made including six new MSSS records and one equalling MSSS record.

Three athletes from Ranau broke the state records during the championship namely Mohd Ikmal Sudin in the Boys U-18 1500m, Olivia Jainis in the Girls U-18 Javelin Throw and Hanizah Matihon in the Girls Heptothlon.

Kota Kinabalu contingent also has few of their athletes on the record boards, Brittany Isabelle Boilis in the Girls 2000m Obstacle Run, Karmentina Nadia Quadra in the Girls U-18 400m Hurdles and Michelle Cornellus Lucas equalling the MSSS Girls U-15 High Jump record.

Whereas Tuaran’s Ivern Lee Lucian broke the Boys U-18 Discus Throw after throwing 44.73m during the finals. Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu’s two gold medals winner, Karmentina Nadia Quadra received the Girls U-18 Sportswoman Award while Mohd Ikmal Sudin of Ranau also took home the Boys U-18 Sportsman Award after contributing one gold medal.

Ranau conquered the U-15 category after athletes Zaid Suhaipin (1 gold and 1 silver) and Olivia Jainis (1 gold and 1 bronze) collected the U-15 Sportsman and Sportswoman Award respectively.

Lastly, another Ranau junior athlete, Jad Rizalman Washif (2 golds) won the Boys U-12 Sportsman Award and Elisha Katrina Emanuel of Penampang contributed two gold medals for the Girls U-12 Sportswoman Award.

The prize presentation ceremony was graced by Institute for Development Studies Sabah (IDS) Director, Datuk Mohd Hasnol Ayub who is also Umno Penampang Deputy Chief accompanied by several district education officers.
