The town of Kuala Penyu is about 114km away from the City of Kota Kinbalu. It is a good road but will still take you about 2 hours to drive there from the city. Kuala Penyu is a coastal town surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and clear blue waters. It is also the point from which one takes the boats to Pulau Tiga Marine Park. The town itself is a “one hourse town” with a couple of rows of shops that sell the basic sundries with the odd coffee shop.
A number of enterprising people have started operating little resorts around the Tempurong area of Kuala Penyu, as it has a very long stretch of fine white sandy beach here. One such resort is called Tempurong Golden Beach resort. It has only 13 rooms but is situated right on the beachfront. It is the perfect place to spend a weekend to enjoy a beach holiday.
However unlike many of the beaches in Thailand or Bali , the beach here is mainly deserted and you are left to your own devices in terms of entertainment .You can go fishing ,swimming , jungle trekking or just read your book lying in a hammock. There is internet coverage but it’s a bit slow, however you still have access to Facebook and will be able to upload your photos. Trips to visit Pulau Tiga Park for snorkelling, scuba diving or enjoying a mud bath in the mud volcano are available at additional cost. Or if you do drive there yourself, visiting the beach at Batu Luang during sunset is especially rewarding.
It is only 1.6km from the resort and the geological landscape here is very different. There are some caves in the cliff wall with a single tower of stones called Batu Punggul standing in the sea admist a pebble strewn beach. According to a local legend, there is an ancient story about the place pertaining to the tragic ending of a couple who were returning home from their wedding when tragedy struck leading to the death of the bride.
According to some folks they can sometimes still hear the wails of the dead bride wailing there. The area’s natural geological formations, including conglomerate deposits of pebbles and gravels that are naturally “glued” together on the rock face, make it an interesting study. Batu Punggul and Pantai Batu Luang can be developed into a unique destination in Sabah.
The approximate cost for a room with 2 double beds (accommodates 4 persons) at Tempurung Golden Beach resort with local breakfast is around RM250.00 a room.
