25th July, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sabah tourism industry won six of the 41 awards at the 15th Malaysia Tourism Awards.

Borneo Eco Tours Sdn Bhd’s Mark Louis Benedict won the Best Tourist Guide Award under the Nature Guide’s category, while Touchdown Luxury Yachts Touchdown Holidays (M) Sdn Bhd walked away with the Best Tour Programme Award under the Luxury Tourism category.

Also in the limelight was TYK Adventure Tours Sdn Bhd which won the Best Tour Operator Award under the Innovative category, Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort for the Best Indian restaurant category and for service excellence in the five-star resort category, and Kinabalu Pine Resort for the service excellence award under the two-star category.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun, who was present at the event held Sunday, told the New Sabah Times that the tourism players did the State proud again this time around with their winnings.

“It is a testimony that Sabah is still considered as a premier holiday destination in the country,” he said.

He added that there is still a lot of room which could be done by the tourism players to improve the relevant industry in the State.

Masidi also stressed that one of Sabah’s great assets are her friendly and unique people.

“I think we should always be proud of the uniqueness of our people, our colorful culture, and our tolerance. These are the assets that lure outsiders to our State,” he said.

Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman, Dato Seri Tengku Zainal Adlin meanwhile said that he was proud of the achievements made by Sabahan establishments that succeeded in beating other top players for the awards.

“We have proven it again that we have what it takes to win. We are blessed with our outstanding heritage, although we still need to conduct a lot of promotional activities to get ourselves known,” he said.

He also commended TYK Adventure Tours Sdn Bhd for winning the ‘Innovative category’ under the Best Tour Operator Award.

“Their achievement really speak well of Sabah, especially in terms of creativity,” he said.

STB General Manager, Datuk Irene Charuruks also expressed her happiness for the awards won by the Sabah players.

“It is an eventful night for Sabah and I would like to congratulate all the winners,” she said.

She added that by winning the awards, the players have demonstrated that Sabah offers world class tourism products.
